If first and foremost they are an excellent homeopath (see article on what makes a good homeopath), then western medical training is of course a plus. However, many people believe that if they choose a homeopath with a western medical degree they are automatically choosing a better homeopath. This is a fallacy. The fact is that while allopathy gives one an excellent understanding of anatomy and pathology, it does nothing to help one understand how to treat homeopathically. Much of western medical training can actually hinder the homeopath’s ability to think and understand disease in a truly holistic manner. It takes years for homeopathic students to think holistically about health, and conversely, it often takes allopathically trained physicians years to “unlearn” the deeply ingrained western paradigm of a materialistic and mechanical view of the body.
In addition to this problem, learning to be a good homeopath takes years and years of concentrated study and practice. Often allopathically trained homeopaths often just don’t have the time to study homeopathy deeply on top of their already extensive allopathic training.
